Back around 1900, interurban electric railways connected many parts of Indiana. This wreck involved two of those trains.
According to the Indiana Historical Bureau, two cars on the Ft. Wayne and Wabash Valley Traction Line collided near Kingsland, Indiana, south of Ft. Wayne. Passengers were on their way to a county fair, and 41 died in the collision.
These four real picture postcards show the aftermath. They are all signed by the photographer, J.H. Hoover.
The first and the fourth cards shown are currently for sale by others, ranging from 50-100 dollars a card. The second and third ones pictured in the collection are ones I’ve never seen. None of the cards has been postmarked.
One of them (on the first card) has some interested handwriting on the back, referring to the sheets covering the dead passengers in the background. I can’t make sense out of the rest of the note, but it sounds like it involves some kind of trial.
All of the cards are in pretty good shape, as pictured. I will ship them in a heavy, polypropylene cover for extra protection.
