Very rare two-piece teak wood Hindustani classical sarod made in India by Hemen and Co. in the late 1960s. The teak wood is beautiful, and the tone of the instrument has the gorgeous, woody resonance that only old choice wood, the old hand pounded steel plates, and the hands of a master artisan can produce.
Structurally, the instrument is in very good shape with no cracks or major repairs, and no severe bowing of the neck and poor playability due to time and string tension such as seen on some vintage era sarods.
There is a good amount of playwear: spots where the French polish is worn through, dents, worming and rash in the finish from scratching against things in the case or while playing, and tarnishing to the plate and other metal parts (upper brass tumba and tailpiece plate).
The instrument was reheaded five years ago, and has been freshly restrung one year ago, (and not played since re-stringing. The instrument has been stored in a climate controlled environment of 69 degrees F. for the past several years.
This instrument comes from the estate of the late Jim Palmer, a student of Pt. Vasant Rai and this was Jim's main instrument. It has been played in major concert halls across the globe. A gorgeous piece from the time period when Hemen Sen and his workshop were producing the best instruments in the history of this instrument’s craft form.
The price includes new strings, plus a spare set of new strings, peg work, jawari, and cleaning up and light polishing of the French polish and steel fingerboard plate. The sarod comes in a well worn but serviceable fiberglass travel hard case.
